  Metal Effect Foils
(item 20666)

Metal Effect Foils
are polyester foils with a metallic coating. The polyester foil will be removed once the coating is permanently fixed on the fabric surface with a thermoplastic glue.

Step-by-Step Instruction
1) Use pre-washed, dried and ironed fabric.
2) Put a piece of baking paper between the fabric and the ironing board.
3) Apply one of the glues described below to the fabric surface.
4) Set iron on cotton (ca. 180-200°C).
5) Put metal effect foil on the fabric where glue was applied with the shiny, colored side up (important !).
6) Put a piece of baking paper on the foil and iron for 20-30 seconds while applying considerable pressure, also use the side or tip of the iron. Work in sections when a big surface needs be foiled.
7) Let cool down a cautiously remove the polyester foil. At areas where glue was applied the metallic coating permanently bonds to the fabric surface. If not sufficient coating was transferred you may repeat the procedure and apply a little more glue.

Wash resistance
Very good results when hand washed (at temperatures up to 30 °C) combined with the glues described below.

Adhesives
Thermoplastic adhesives are suited, which permanently melt into the fabric when heat is applied. The amount of adhesive has a direct impact on the foiling effect: with little adhesive, not all the metallic coating will be transferred from the foil to the fabric, with more adhesive a shiny metallic surface will be achieved. Don’t use too much adhesive, otherwise the glue penetrates the fabric and sticks on both sides. I addition the fabrics becomes stiff.
. Fusible Powder Glue (Item # 19768): flows very well and can be sprinkled ion the fabric.
. Fusible Pudding Glue (Item # 19749): water based glue paste. The wet and also the dried glue can easily be washed away. This glue can be applied to the fabric with a brush (if necessary dilute the glue with some water), by screen printing, by stamping, with a tube, with stencils or simply with your fingers (like finger paint). Allow the glue to dry well before foiling.
. Fusible web (e.g. Steam-A-Seam 2 or Vliesofix, Steam-A-Seam 2 transfers a little more adhesive): are not only suited for appliqué but also very well for foiling.

Fabrics
A uniform transfer of the metallic coating from the foil to the fabric can only be achieved with plain, smooth fabrics with no strong texture. The fabrics should be prewashed. Self dyed fabrics should be foiled after the dying process.
